Paulo Freire education theory
Paulo Freire is one of the best philosophers in my opinion. He has a significant talent to explain his philosophies and connect them to the real world by using good examples. In chapter 2 of his reading he explains his philosophy of education which involves the teacher and the student. He explains how education can either be used to oppress people or liberate them from the oppressors. Towards the end of the chapter he talks about problem posing education and how this does not benefit the oppressors.
“Problem-posing education does not and cannot serve the interest of the oppressor: No oppressive order could permit the oppressed to begin to question: Why?” (86) this is just one of his many philosophies of education. Here Freire is saying that problem posing will not benefit the oppressors because the oppressed will start wondering, doubting and asking why? This just means that the oppressed will start questioning things which can start to question the oppressor’s authority. This means that this type of education only benefits the oppressed because it is a start towards their liberation.
I agree with this quote 100% because it is true that if the oppressors want to keep their dominant status then problem posing education is a threat to them. It is a thread to them because it opens up the minds of the oppressed giving them more knowledge and a start to their consciousness. The question “Why” is very important towards an individual’s liberation because it question the oppressor and the reason why they are the oppressed. I agree with this because usually when individuals are not too sure of something and have doubt they are less likely to agree with it.
Problem posing education will only harm the oppressors by educating the oppressed on way that problems can be solved in a variety of ways. This shows the oppressed that they can get out of the situation they are in and possibly liberate themselves. This is why problem posing education will hurt the oppressors. This is why I agree with Paulo Freire’s quote on problem prosing not being able to exist in an oppressive order.
