Critical lens
The problem that is surrounded by my issue is the increase gap between the rich and the poor. My issue is also surrounded by globalization which can lead to an increase in the gap between the rich and the poor. My issue has a lot to do with the economy and the way that the wealth is distributed and how this affects the rest of the world but most importantly the United States.
Around the world the increase gap between these two groups is very important because it creates a lot of injustices around the world. Since poor people have less power and need work to provide for their families and survive it is easier for the rich to exploit them. Since poor people compete for jobs and are willing to work for lower wages to have a job this causes exploitation. Also the minimum wage is already a wage that is a living wage for the bare necessities going even lower that this wage to have a job leads to non- living wages and conditions.
My issue is mostly economical but it can also relate to social and political. It is mostly economical because it all deals with the distribution of money. The reason that my issue can turn into a social issue is because the distribution of wealth is lob-sided towards the rich causing for jobs to be cut. This affects a lot of workers which are being laid off because they now have to worry about finding new jobs and those that are not being laid off worry about job security. My issue can also turn into a political one since it deals a lot with globalization. There are a lot of rules and regulations with the economy for example minimum wage, unions, taxes and other things like this that involve some type of political involvedness’.
Even though my issue can involve multiple different perspectives I am going to focus on the economic issue. Robert Reich an economist uses a metaphor to describe our economy “of boats rising or falling with the tide” (intro, para.1). In his chapter of “Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer” from his book The Work Of Nations he explains his economic theory. He believes that there are three boats in the ocean one boat which carries routine workers, the second boat carries in-person servers and the third boat carries symbolic analyst. I agree with Reich because I think that the boats carrying routine workers and in-person servers are sinking while the third one is rising. I think that this is because globalization has shifted the distribution of wealth towards the third boat only.
The scope that I will be looking at this problem will be the ones of Americans that are not part of that third boat because they face a real problem here in America. Americans are in a constant competition with other workers around the world to keep jobs here but unfortunately jobs are moving elsewhere and have to compete for jobs that offer lower wages here in America so in a way they are down grading instead of upgrading. This is a big problem because even if students are able to graduate from college they are entering an economy that is not offering enough of jobs for everyone and some college kids will not find jobs after their hard work and dedication in school.

The critical lens of the American society on Globalization is that our economy is starting to decline because of Globalization. Only the rich are the ones benefiting from this because they are becoming richer by exploiting workers.
